Fredericksburg NationalsMarcus Brown drove in the go-ahead run way back in the third inning, as the Fredericksburg Nationals bullpen preserved a 4-3 win over Augusta.

It was actually the GreenJackets, the Low-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, who struck first, in the top of the second inning. PO Boucher led off with a single and quickly stole second base, then moved to third on a single by Jose Dilone.

Later in the frame, Jacob Godman lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, deep enough to score Boucher from third base.

Then in the top of the third, EJ Exposito got plunked, before Drew Compton singled. Will Verdung followed with another single to plate Expositio and make it 2-0. After a walk loaded the bases, Kade Kern plated another run with a ground ball to third base.

But in the home half, Fredericksburg, the Low-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, responded right away. John McHenry reached on an E6, then Yoander Rivero singled. After a strikeout, Dylan Crews walked to load the bases, Yohandy Morales punched a RBI single into left field to make it 3-1 ‘Jackets.

Andrew Pinckney was then grazed by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a second run, before Marcus Brown lifted a fly ball into shallow left field that drove both Crews and Morales in to put the FredNats in front 4-3.

From there, the Nats bullpen dominated. Pedro Gonzalez worked through the fifth inning without allowing any more runs. Bubba Hall followed with two shutout frames with two punchouts, then Moises Diaz slammed the door with a pair of perfect innings, striking out three men as well.

Gonzalez earned the win to improve to 6-2, Diaz secured his first save with Fredericksburg, while Riley Frey took the loss.

In Game 4 on Friday, Tanner Rainey will make a rehab start for the Nats, against top Braves pitching prospect Owen Murphy.

UVA women’s soccer opened its 2023 season with a 5-0 win over Nevada on Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium.

The Cavaliers got on the board in the 27th minute as Allie Ross was taken down in the box to set up a penalty kick for the ‘Hoos. The freshman stepped to the spot and buried the chance for her first collegiate goal.

Ross then extended the lead in the 39th minute when a ball played in wasn’t corralled by the Nevada keeper after a Wolf Pack player deflected it and she buried the deflected ball for the 2-0 lead at the half.

Virginia added a third goal in the 53rd minute when another ball played in off a corner that was headed by Talia Staude and deflected by the keeper. Meredith McDermott cleaned it up from inside the six to give the Hoos the 3-0 lead.

McDermott notched a brace with her second goal in the 71st minute. A long ball played ahead by Aniyah Carter was collected by Ross who raced to the right corner of the box. She sent the ball over to McDermott who slotted the ball past the keeper for the 4-0 lead.

The ‘Hoos capped the scoring in the 76th minute when Laughlin Ryan played a through ball ahead into the box that Brianna Jablonowski picked up in stride and sent in past the keeper toward the left post.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday when the Cavaliers host Radford in a 6 p.m. contest at Klöckner Stadium.

Like it or not, Notre Dame has a full voting share at the Atlantic Coast Conference roundtable.

Many believe that since the Irish elect not to be a member of the ACC in football, they should not have a say into anything football-related.

But they do.

And last week, Notre Dame was all-in on adding the two Northern California schools, Cal and Stanford, into the league.

But enough schools were, enough, for now, to stop that from happening.

The Irish are in the ACC for all their sports except football. That was negotiated when their sports were merged into the conference in 2014. Although Notre Dame remains independent, they contractually play five ACC teams in their football schedule.

Simply put, Notre Dame has the best of both worlds.

The so-called experts predict that future ACC expansion, or not, will have no impact on Notre Dame’s view of football independence.

Not so fast, as ESPN’s Lee Corso might say.

The Fighting Irish may have voted in favor of westward expansion of the ACC, thinking about the landscape of college football a few years down the road, and the potential scheduling impact they may face.

Traditional rivalries are huge for the Irish. Some of the biggest annual clashes for Notre Dame are games with Southern Cal, Cal and Stanford.

The networks that are paying a king’s ransom to two of the super conferences (Big 10, SEC) are making a lot of noise about adding inventory to their fall Saturdays.

And that ain’t talking about Alabama-Troy, Michigan-Western Michigan -type games. The networks are all about adding at least one, two extra conference matchups to their scheduling options.

Their thoughts?

An Alabama-Vanderbilt or Michigan-Rutgers matchup will bring in more eyeballs than the above-mentioned cupcakes.

If the major conference even adds one extra conference game a season, the list of potential opponents for Notre Dame starts to get a bit thinner.

Which leads us back to the Irish and their yes vote on ACC expansion.

Cal and Stanford are the two biggest pieces remaining of the Pac-4, and it’s no secret they are actively looking for a new conference. One of those potential landing spots is the ACC, last week’s no votes notwithstanding.

So, non-conference football member Notre Dame is all in on Cal and Stanford joining the conference, all the while maintaining football independence.

Makes sense.

And if the folks down in Greensboro, or is it Charlotte now, have any sense, they will find one more yes vote to get this done.

Why?

Because adding Cal and Stanford may eventually lead to Notre Dame being all-in on ACC football.

They may not have any other options.

If the Golden Bears or Cardinal joins a conference that is playing a nine- or 10-game conference slate, the desire to play a rugged non-conference game with Notre Dame may not be appealing.

Same goes for USC or UCLA.

Like it or not, Notre Dame may be forced to join a conference for their own inventory.

I can’t imagine NBC paying millions and millions of dollars to the Irish for a steady diet of Cupcake City.

It became clear this week the other schools in the ACC may be forced into a corner, and that expansion is the only path to move forward.

Florida State and Clemson have had their eyes on the SEC for at least 15 years.

But the feeling may not have been mutual, as the SEC has remained steadfast that they are not interested in expansion, at least for the time being.

Also, that darn grant of rights deal may be ironclad.

Stanford has informed the ACC that it would be open to joining the conference at reduced or even no media rights for several years, according to some wire services.

Could that persuade Stanford and Cal the necessary votes to expand? We may learn soon.

In the meantime, Notre Dame’s desire to expand the conference could speak volumes about the Irish and their coveted football independence.

The Bennett name is well-known, well-established and well-respected in Andrew Rohde’s stomping grounds of Wisconsin, with natives Tony Bennett and his father, Dick, having coached college basketball for years throughout the state of Wisconsin and beyond.

Hailing from the Milwaukee area where he attended Brookfield Central HS, there was a sense of familiarity for Rohde and a Wisconsin connection at UVA, especially with the reputation the Bennett family has built.

“Oh, it’s huge. It’s huge up there,” Rohde said of the Bennett name. “But yeah, I mean, I’ve known about them since I was little, especially because my parents grew up in the Neenah, Green Bay area, so they were big fans of Dick Bennett as well. So we grew up just knowing the name.”

Playing for his father, Tony Bennett made a name for himself as a freshman at Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1988-89, averaging 19.1 points, 2.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He shot 52 percent from the floor (179-for-343), 44 percent from 3-point land (47-for-107) and 85 percent from the foul line (111-for-131).

Bennett was named the Mid-Continent Conference Rookie of the Year, and was named to the all-conference second team. For his career at Green Bay, Bennett shot an eye-popping 49.7 percent from beyond the arc (290-for-584) before going on to a three-year career with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, prior to stepping into the coaching realm.

“He’s definitely a better shooter than me. I’m trying to get on his level,” said Rohde.

Rohde, a 6-foot-6, 185-pound sophomore wing, has found a second home in Charlottesville after transferring from St. Thomas College in Minnesota in the spring.

Rohde’s numbers weren’t too far off from Bennett’s in his first year at the Division-I level. Last season as a freshman with the Tommies, Rohde torched the nets, finishing the season strong with several 20-point performances down the stretch (eight times across his final 10 games).

He scored in double figures in all but three games all season, averaging 17.1 points per game on 45-percent shooting (189-for-422) from the field and 32-percent (56-for-175) from long range. He made at least one 3-pointer in all but four contests, and sank three — or more — triples in nine games last season.

Rohde was also reliable from the charity stripe, connecting on 97 of his 119 free-throw attempts (82 percent). He poured in a career-high 27 points in the regular-season finale at North Dakota. Rohde started all 31 games for the Tommies, and was named an all-conference first-team selection and the Summit League (formerly known as the Mid-Continent Conference) Rookie of the Year.

“I mean, going into it, I didn’t really think a lot about what accolades I was trying to achieve,” he admitted. “I was just trying to play my hardest and help my team win the most amount of games. So I wasn’t really going in thinking of the certain things I was going to win, but obviously it’s a blessing to be able to win those awards.”

Following the mass exodus in the UVA basketball program, Bennett saw a diamond in the rough, so to speak, and is happy to add that scoring ability to a roster that lost a large chunk of its offensive output from a year ago.

“We are excited to add Andrew to the Virginia basketball family,” Bennett said. “Andrew is a talented guard who had a terrific freshman season at St. Thomas. We look forward to him joining our program.”

Rohde is a solid defensive player as well, and has a knack for picking up steals. He averaged 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Rohde ranked sixth in the Summit League in scoring, second in steals, fifth in assists and fourth in field-goal percentage. Not too shabby for a first-year player.

In his two Summit League Tournament appearances, Rohde averaged 23.5 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals, and shot 50 percent from downtown (8 for 16). He was named to the all-tournament team as a result.

So how did he wind up at St. Thomas? Was he overlooked coming out of high school or did he just overachieve in his initial season at the college level? Rohde was a 3-star prospect, rated No. 316 nationally in the 247 Composite rankings coming out of Brookfield. He was also offered by  Wisconsin-Milwaukee, DePaul, Appalachian State, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Western Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and Bowling Green.

“Yeah I think I was a little bit under-recruited in high school,” Rohde said, “but it was all God’s plan and I ended up where I was supposed to end up that first year, and it was a blessing in disguise, for sure. And obviously in high school, every kid wants to go play at the highest Division-I school and do all that stuff, but I think going to St. Thomas was a great opportunity for me.”

At season’s end, Rohde decided it was time for a step up in competition, as much as he enjoyed his time in Minnesota.

“Yeah, it was amazing,” said Rohde. “I love St. Thomas. I love the people — the people there are amazing too, and it was just a great place for me to be, and I’m really glad I spent my first year there.”

After putting his name in the transfer portal and hearing from numerous suitors, it was just something about Charlottesville and the Cavalier program that attracted him.

“Being in the transfer portal was a real crazy thing,” he recalled. “Just a lot of people calling your phone every day and whatnot. But the thing that stood out to me about UVA was just kind of the family atmosphere that they have here and just the people, because that’s really what I was looking for — playing for a coach where I think I could do it and build a relationship with, but also being around great people, and that’s ultimately what it came down to, and UVA was the place for me.”

Rohde is the highest-rated incoming Virginia transfer (No. 58 nationally), according to recently updated rankings by On3.com (Dante Harris was No. 65; Jordan Minor was 102; Jacob Groves was 251). Rohde was also listed as the 17th-best shooting guard transfer in the country by 247, and is among On3’s top 10 “steals” in the transfer portal.

Along with Bennett, there’s also an even deeper Wisconsin connection, with Rohde’s new Cavalier teammates Reece Beekman and Leon Bond III also hailing from the state.

“I think it played a big role,” Rohde said of his decision, “just because Coach Bennett had been from Wisconsin, but also having Reece and Leon here from Wisconsin as well, I think it played a big part.”

Rohde and the rest of the Hoos have been bonding with their teammates on and off the court throughout the summer, and he believes all the right pieces are in place for a successful season.

“We have a great team in terms of the people on our team. We have a bunch of good guys,” he said. “We like being together a lot, especially just hanging out outside of practice and basketball outside of the gym, which is really good.”

Rohde has spent the past few weeks practicing with the Cavaliers, and has seen first-hand how the transition from what he saw at St. Thomas compared to ACC-level competition is going to look.

“It’s been a lot different, just a lot of athleticism and length, and obviously defensively,” Rohde pointed out. “It’s just been crazy going at it every day with my teammates. The practices have been really good. But I’m really excited to play that level of competition this year, and hopefully we can do some damage.”

One thing is for certain, and that’s the fact that Rohde is enjoying the warmer temperatures in Central Virginia as opposed to the frigid weather up north.

“A lot of snow and long winters, definitely,” described Rohde of what he’s used to. “It just gets really cold there, but with the snow added on to that, it’s just a lot to deal with in the winters for sure.”

Rohde said his main goals in the immediate future are improving his shooting, ball-handling and his defense, and knows that the latter is a top priority that will keep him on the court at UVA.

“I still have a lot to work on the defensive end, so I’m just trying to learn the new defensive schemes and all that sort of thing, and hopefully put it all together,” he said.

Learning the Pack Line is always a challenge for a newcomer stepping into the program, but Rohde feels that he’s getting the hang of it. It may take some more time to truly get it all down, but it’s certainly a point of emphasis in his training.

“I mean, it’s a lot different,” said Rohde. “Just picking that up and learning it, I think I’m doing a decent job so far, but honestly, there’s still a lot I have to work on to get to the place where I want to be.”

All things considered, Rohde is ready to start school next week and to continue to get to know the Charlottesville area and the UVA program, and he’s just been enjoying the ride.

“Definitely, definitely. I’m loving it so far,” Rohde said. “It’s a real family atmosphere, and I knew that going through the recruiting process and all that, but now that I’ve been up here, I really feel it and everybody’s there for each other, but Charlottesville is great, too.”

Although he’s new to the area, Rohde has been impressed by the variety of great food options. For any local restaurant owners considering NIL involvement and are looking for a Cavalier to rep your business, Rohde just may be your guy.

“The food has really drawn me,” he said. “The food here is amazing. There’s a lot of different food spots, we go out to eat a lot — I like Mel’s Cafe, Citizen Burger is good, Jack Brown’s is good, Asado, a couple different other spots.”

While Wahoo fans might bump into Rohde at one of their favorite local eateries, what kind of player can they expect to see on the floor wearing the No. 4 jersey at JPJ in a few months and beyond?

“I would just say lengthy and gritty,” Rohde said. “I try to just play my hardest every time I step on the floor, and I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team win.”

AEW, frankly, embarrassed itself, its fans and the wrestling business with its shameless attention-grab “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” match on this week’s “Dynamite.”

Not even donating the $100,000 that the company got from the makers of a video game based on the horror-movie franchise to Maui fire relief can make the stink go away.

And for that matter: $100,000?

That’s what 15 minutes of “Dynamite” is worth to Tony Khan?

Seriously?

(The sound you hear is me contacting my investment advisor, while trying to figure out what I’d spend $100,000 promoting.)

The premise of the match was bad enough, and I’ll give Khan credit for trying to make the best of it by having two veteran guys, Jeff Hardy and Jeff Jarrett, to make it as presentable as possible.

But then the way it was booked – with any number of run-ins, including one guy made up to be Leatherface – was just ridiculous.

It was as carny, cartoony WWE as you can imagine.

How bad was it?

The WCW RoboCop called, and he wants an FTW title shot next week.

Interesting challenge with MJF-Adam Cole storyline

Khan has really booked himself into an interesting corner with the MJF-Adam Cole angle. I can’t imagine that Khan thought it would go off as well as it has; it seemed at the outset to just be a way to get two enemies to have to be a tag team, with the end result being the main event at “All In.”

Except that, the tag team is over as much as anything AEW has done in its four-year history.

The logical conclusion, one turning on the other in the AEW title match in Wembley, would also kill off a grouping that is pushing ratings and merch.

Don’t be surprised if Khan tries to keep them together for a while longer, to let things more naturally come to an end.

How he would do that is the hard part.

I like this idea for FTR-Young Bucks

Brian Last, the co-host of Jim Cornette’s top-rated weekly wresting podcasts, has laid out the two ways the FTR-Young Bucks match at “All In” has to end, and I agree with how he sees this one.

One, The Young Bucks put themselves over, because they’re The Young Bucks, and they have the power of the book, and want to be able to brag about beating FTR in front of 80,000 screaming fans.

Two, the Bucks agree to do the job, but not clean, and the not clean part has CM Punk interfering on behalf of FTR.

The second one gives us a few days to build toward something even bigger for “All Out” in Chicago, Punk’s hometown.

Intriguing, that second one.

I’ll throw in a third possibility: the Bucks go over in Wembley, agreeing ahead of time to give the belts back to FTR in Chicago.

I think this last one is the most likely.

But, man, the second one, if only we could be so lucky.

Davey Martinez won the World Series in 2019. He may be doing his best job as a manager this year.

Martinez has the Washington Nationals going 16-9 since July 21. Included in that stretch: three-game sweeps of San Francisco and Cincinnati, a series win over Milwaukee, a win last night over Boston.

All four of those squads are in the playoff hunt – the Brewers currently sitting in first in the NL Central, the Reds tied for second, and tied for the third NL wild-card slot; and the Red Sox are three back in the AL wild-card race.

All of this with a makeshift everyday lineup with a couple of young guys that came from trades made at the beginning of the teardown (CJ Abrams, Keibert Ruiz), a throw-in from the Jon Lester trade (Lane Thomas) who couldn’t get on the field in St. Louis and has 20 homers and an .808 OPS this year in DC.

Three-hole hitter Joey Meneses, the 31-year-old who finally reached the bigs last season after the Juan Soto dump-off, is slashing .281/.329/.418 with 11 homers and a .746 OPS.

Stone Garrett, who had trouble getting out of the Arizona system despite hitting 25 homers in Double-A and Triple-A in 2021 and 28 homers in Triple-A in 2022, has nine homers and an .803 OPS in 83 games for the Nats in 2023.

The two prized pitching prospects picked up in the Soto and Max Scherzer-Trea Turner trades – Josiah Gray (7-10, 3.96 ERA) and MacKenzie Gore (6-9, 4.38 ERA) – are having their moments, good and bad.

Patrick Corbin, who is getting paid $24 million this year, and is set to be paid $35 million next year, the final year of the six-year deal he signed in 2019, is 7-11 with a 4.85 ERA.

(That’s a big improvement over his last two years – Corbin was 9-16 with a 5.82 ERA in 2021, and 6-19 with a 6.31 ERA in 2022.)

This is about as slapdash a roster as you can put together, basically.

And Martinez has it a game behind the $351 million New York Mets for fourth in the NL East.

Fredericksburg NationalsThe Fredericksburg Nationals rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to pick up a 5-1 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first, Augusta’s Jace Grady ripped a solo home run off of Luke Young in the top of the second inning.

But from there, Young settled into a groove. The right-hander retired nine straight batters after that, and went on to strike out eight men over six one-run innings.

However, Augusta’s starter, Jhancarlos Lara, was also extremely efficient. He allowed just two base hits through five innings, while punching out nine batters and walking just two.

But after Lara left, the FredNats, the Low-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, feasted against Estarlin Rodriguez in the sixth. Elijah Nunez and Dylan Crews each singled to open things up. Yohandy Morales then smoked a double to the left field wall to bring both men around, giving the Freddies a 2-1 lead. YoYo moved to third base on an Andrew Pinckney groundout, then Roismar Quintana brought him in with a sharp ground ball past the pulled-in infield to make it 3-1 Fredericksburg.

Jonathon Thomas pinch ran for Quintana, and immediately swiped second base. Max Romero Jr. then drove Tuda in with a bloop single to right, making it a four-run frame to jump ahead 4-1.

Orlando Ribalta entered in relief of Young, and struck out the side in the seventh inning. In the bottom half, Crews extended the FredNats’ lead to 5-1 with an RBI single back up the chute, and that was plenty of breathing room.

Thomas Schultz worked a scoreless eighth, and Marquis Grissom slammed the door in the ninth to preserve a 5-1 win for Fredericksburg.

Luke Young got the win, while Estarlin Rodriguez took the loss. In game three of six, Travis Sthele makes his home debut, against Riley Frey.

richmond flying squirrelsThe Richmond Flying Squirrels were silenced in a 4-0 shutout loss against the Harrisburg Senators on Wednesday night at The Diamond.

The Flying Squirrels (55-55, 22-19), the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, were held to three hits and five total baserunners by the Senators (53-56, 22-19), the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

After Jacob Young led off the game with a walk, he ended up at second on a stolen base. Young stole third base then advanced home on a throwing error by Richmond starter John Michael Bertrand (Loss, 1-2) to push Harrisburg ahead, 1-0.

In the fifth inning, Young blasted an RBI triple and later scored on an RBI double from Robert Hassell III to give the Senators a 3-0 advantage.

The Senators extended their lead to 4-0 in the seventh inning when Young hit an RBI single.

After back-to-back strikeouts in the eighth, Victor Bericoto hammered a double and Brandon Martorano drew a walk to try and kickstart a rally. Harrisburg reliever Reid Schaller responded with a groundout to hold Richmond scoreless.

Bertrand worked five innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks with five strikeouts. Matt Frisbee set down the Senators in order in the sixth inning.

Harrisburg starter DJ Herz (Win, 1-1) held the Flying Squirrels to one hit over five innings and struck out a season-high 10 batters.

The Flying Squirrels face the Senators Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Hayden Birdsong (0-2, 8.31) will make his third start for Richmond.

Thursday is Preparedness and Weather night presented by PlanRVA and Emergency Management Alliance of Central VA. The Flying Squirrels team up with PlanRVA to educate and inform fans about emergency management and preparedness. Fans can enjoy fireworks from up close and inside the fences after the game.

Tickets are available online at SquirrelsBaseball.com/Tickets, by phone at 804-359-FUNN (3866) or in person at the Flying Squirrels ticket office.
